***PRESS RELEASE***

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has published the first issue of a
new journal focussing on historical projects and techniques across the
spectrum of civil engineering disciplines.

An addition to ICE’s leading Proceedings series, Engineering History and
Heritage will provide practical information for today’s engineer as well as
a wealth of detailed accounts for engineering history experts.

Key areas the journal will concentrate on include safety and sustainability
of structures around the world, adaptation of our engineering heritage to
meet the challenges of the 21st century, restoration and conservation of
civil engineering’s heritage, and assessments of milestone developments in
the profession.

Writing the editorial for the first issue, Chair of the Editorial Advisory
Board and recent recipient of ASCE’s History and Heritage award, Ronald Cox
said: “Every branch of civil engineering has a history and it is important
to understand and appreciate the challenges faced by the members of the
profession in the past.

“The aim of this journal is to chronicle the historical development of all
the distinct disciplines within civil engineering and construction on a
worldwide basis…[it] will also be of particular interest to practitioners
and researchers who are faced increasingly with the challenges of
maintaining or adapting the world’s inherited infrastructure in a
sustainable way.”

The new journal has an international outlook, with support for the
publication garnered from engineering societies in the USA, Canada, South
Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and with members of the profession across
Europe and Asia signing up to provide content.

Thomas Telford Publisher Leon Heward-Mills said: “We are always looking to
produce journals that help the profession move forward. What this latest
publication reminds us, is that much of the knowledge we need to move
forward is gained by looking back.”
