Abstract :
The first excavation of a workshop specialising in copper and copper alloy in medieval Paris took place in the Villeneuve du Temple district. A house and furnaces were found as were finished objects and production waste. Multiple approaches and levels of observation were possible given the results of the combined archaeological, written and cartographic research. Archaeometry, standing buildings study, and the determination of the social and economic context complete the picture. Copper was omnipresent in material culture. It was used to make dress accessories, kitchen pots as well as liturgical objects. In the Paris of the 13th and 14th centuries there was a strong demand and an enormous market. The traditional view based on the Livre des metiers by Etienne Boileau was that there were small specialised workshops divided by the type of production. However the conclusions of our research contradict this view. Production was in fact diversified as were techniques. Work inside the large workshop found was specialised and organised so as to limit expert knowledge and thereby privilege an unskilled workforce. The work was segmented, divided and organised hierarchically. Techniques were rationalised so as to reduce the cost of basic materials and facilitate the low cost mass production of objects, in this case dress accessories. Productivity was driven by both strict cost limits and demand.
