Human Enhancement: an interdisciplinary inquiry
Second workshop
Measures and criteria of enhancement
December 11-12, 2009
Salle Leduc
Centre Universitaire des Sts. Pères
45, rue des Sts. Pères
75006 Paris
Can enhancement be measured? According to what criteria? Are the measurements and criteria used to evaluate non invasive practices (such as those that make it possible to maintain a juvenile appearance) the same as those used for more invasive procedures (such as taking hormones to increase height or to run more quickly, taking psychostimulants to stay awake and to increase intellectual performance)? When making measurements, would it not be appropriate to measure not only enhancement of desired performance but also concomitant improvement or deterioration of morbidity, life expectancy and ordinary forms of human performance, as suggested by the British Medical Association in its book on Drugs in Sport – The Pressure to Perform?
This workshop will attempt to address these questions, and will also consider measures of quality of life, a tool of primary importance developed by the World Health Association.
