In this workshop, we will study how early modern machines, machine ideas and machine practices were transferred between very different contexts. In this process, guided by material constraints as well as by the imaginative processes of the actors, these machines came to represent new meanings, to perform new functions and to embody new kinds of knowledge. In particular, the contributors will look at recontextualisations between natural philosophy and mathematics on the one hand and warfare, practical engineering, theatre and religion on the other hand.
