International Conference
'Kings, Princes and their Cabinets of Physics: Playing and Learning, Power and Wealth'
Lisbon, 3-5 May 2012

A Call for Papers will be released in a couple of months, but we will be looking into issues such as types of royal cabinets of physics (teaching, entertainment, decorative, library-based), organisation, spaces used for cabinets in palaces, scientific iconography, royal gifts, royal patronage of cabinets of physics, role of diplomacy in trade, issues of power and status, etc.

We are also very interested in royal cabinets/instruments'-transfer between Courts and universities/colleges, Courts and museums, and between countries, through marriages, exiles, spoils of war, compensations, and so on.

The perspective will be historical and the time-span broad (royal cabinets of physics and natural philosophy from the Renaissance onwards).
This Conference is part of a research project we have been doing into royal cabinets of physics in Portugal and Brazil.
