- Vendredi 8 mars, 9h-11h: Robin Pearson (University of Hull), “Industrial fires and insurance, Britain, 1750-1850″
Great Britain was the site of not only the world’s first industrial revolution, but also of the world’s first modern insurance industry. This paper focuses on the relationship between the two. First, it will examine the impact of the industrial revolution on the development of fire insurance in Britain from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century. How did British underwriters change their assessment of fire risk when faced with rising losses on the insurance of new industrial properties, new forms of production organisation, and new types of machinery and manufacturing processes. To what extent were ‘modern’ actuarial methods being applied in British fire insurance by 1850, after the long accumulated experience of industrialisation? Second, this paper will assess the impact of fire insurance on the development of British industry in this period. Did the mass provision of fire insurance have any impact on the way that business people organised industrial production? In particular, did insurance change their perceptions of fire risk and their response to fire prevention and safety in industrial and commercial properties?
