Les premiers ordinateurs Olivetti: Deux études de cas in "brand making"

One of the lasting heritages of the Olivetti has been the careful attention to
its branding (design as well as communication) and to the state-of-the-art
technology (often in partnership with  research institutions). These same
elements can be found in the development of the first generation of Olivetti
computers, which covers more or less a decade, from the the establishing of
the New Canaan laboratory (1952) up until the selling of the electrical
division to General Electrics (1964). In this talk we will sketch the main
events of those years, focussing on two exemplary case studies. The first one
concerns the cooperation with the University of Pisa, which resulted in the
first Italian computer, Macchina Ridotta (1957). The second one deal with on a
specific project for supporting the diffusion of ELEA 9003, the first Olivetti
mainframe (1960): an agenda designed by renewed artist Bruno Caruso.
