The National Railway Museum, one of the two partners in the IRS&TH, yesterday announced a wide-ranging restructuring, the stated aims of which are:

"To support our new vision and strategy and grow our
audiences

• a stronger, cohesive narrative about the railways,
• greater emphasis on the interpretation of our collections,
• a five year plan for our public programme with integrated
learning offer,
• enabling us to reach broader audiences.
To contribute to the savings that S[cience]M[usuem]G[roup] needs to make
in light of Government cuts
"

As part of this restructuring, all direct financial support from the NRM to the Institute of Railway Studies & Transport History will be withdrawn by the end of the current financial year. The NRM and the University of York intend to retain the Institute and discussions are in hand about its future development.

As a result of these changes, I shall be leaving my post as head of the Institute on 14th February 2014 and taking early retirement, although I shall continue (on a part-time basis) as professor of railway studies in the University of York until November 2015, solely to supervise my existing research students.

The Institute's lectureship is not affected. Dr Sinha is currently on research leave until the summer of 2015.

This term's programme of research workshops will continue but, as previously announced, will not then resume for the forseeable future.

No more applications will be accepted for any of the Institute's teaching and research programmes before the 2015-16 session at the earliest. However, the Centre for Lifelong Learning is intending to offer a new Postgraduate Diploma in Railway Studies from the 2014-15 session.
