and Metaphysics in 17-th century Britain (26 Mai, Paris;
23 Juin, Berlin)

(Université Paris 1, CNRS), Vincenzo de Risi (Max Planck
Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte)
The general aim of this joint workshop (26th May, Université
Paris 7; 23rd June, Max Planck Institut für
Wissenschafsgeschichte) is to explore 17-th century
mathematics and metaphysics by focussing on the
contributions of two key figures in early modern Britain:
John Wallis (1616-1703) and Isaac Barrow (1630-1677).
The first of the two meetings ("Between tradition and
innovation: mathematics and philosophy of mathematics in
John Wallis" ) will be devoted to the philosophy of
mathematics and mathematical practice in Wallis. The second
meeting ("Geometry and philosophy of space in Isaac Barrow")
will investigate Barrow's philosophy of space.
