Résumé de son intervention :

The paper will examine the eighteenth-century career of William Whiston and Humphry Ditton's failed attempt to solve the problem of longitude using rocket signals. While the scheme was rejected in 1714 as a solution to the problem of finding longitude at sea it developed into a more successful method on land. The paper will explore how rockets and gunpowder explosions shaped cartographic and surveying practices and remind us that longitude was not just a maritime problem in the era of the famous 'longitude prize'.
