Track 20. The use of imaging technologies in the biomedical field. New expertises, practices and professional visions | L'uso delle tecnologie d'immagine in campo biomedico. Nuovi saperi, pratiche e sguardi professionali

Text:
The development of new imaging technologies in the biomedical field, as
diagnostic and intervention tool exploring the patient's body, creates new
sociotechnical environments and modifies clinical and research practices.
Now that Radiology is increasingly becoming more curative and more
interventional and Surgery is developing into a less and less invasive practice,
are the production, use and interpretation of images contributing to reshape
and redistribute knowledge and skills among the different professionals
operating on the medical scene? Are the different professional visions
changing because of the use of minimally-invasive imaging technologies and
thanks to the introduction of miniaturised prosthesis, aiming to make visible,
explore, diagnose and treat the human body? Is this causing any new
conflicts between professionals to negotiate their territories of skills? Which
role is carried out by imaging technologies in the intertwining among practices
of diagnosis, intervention and research? How do these technologies, in their
contexts-of-use, transform, shape and interact with practice and expertise of
the different actors involved, such as physicians, biologists, radiological
technicians, scientists and patients?
Special attention will be given to empirical studies, especially
ethnographies of clinics and laboratories, as well as theoretical reflections
through a wide range of disciplines : Sociology, Anthropology, Semiotics,
History , and analytical approaches. In particular, the aim of this track is to
discuss the role of biomedical imaging technologies with reference to some
key areas of interest:
- New practices of treatment and diagnostic investigation mediated by
imaging technologies and new forms of minimally-invasive
procedures;
- New professional visions, expertise and abilities: "seeing through the
eyes of the machine", seeing through images, making the invisible
visible;
- Body proximity or distance in the new practices of clinical Surgery
and Telemedicine;
- New forms of exploration, visualisation and deconstruction of the
human body;
- New medical, ethical, political and social challenges;
- Negotiating new territories of skills among radiological technicians
and physicians/surgeons;
- The "digital turn".
