Mix and Match : A Multi-fiber History of Japanese Textiles in a Global Perspective 1750-1970

Résumé : Most textile histories are spinned by-fiber and separate accounts produced of global histoires of cotton, silk, wool, ramie or synthetics. This talk sets Japan’s textile history in a global context by tracing the changes in the structure of the production of various fibers within the same region as well as across different regions. As a rare country that was the leading producer of several major fiber groups at different points in the 19^th and 20^th centuries, Japan is uniquely placed to be the experimental ground for the explorations in new global mixed-fiber textile history.
