From Culture 1.0 to Culture 3.0: where do we stand in the transition?

The main and most revolutionary effect that the digital had on culture has been the immediate and swift breaking down of the barrier between creators and the public. Indeed, production no longer takes place only within a hierarchical and elitist logic – such as within the traditional cultural and creative industry models –  but new media have opened up the possibility of being co-authors of cultural content with easy-access tools and strategies that can pave the way to enable people to participate in a proactive and co-creative way.

To understand the effects of the digital revolution on modes of cultural and creative production and on their economic and social impact, the framework of Culture 3.0 (Sacco 2011) distinguished between three regimes of production: Patronage (Culture 1.0); Cultural and Creative Industries (Culture 2.0); and Open Communities of Practice (Culture 3.0).

Based on a set of computational analysis on content co-creation that took place in the H2020 project inDICEs, in this talk we will try to assess the state of transition towards an effective adoption of Culture 3.0 practices. In particular, three case studies on Twitter, TikTok and Wikipedia respectively will be presented and discussed.

Pier Luigi Sacco is Professor of Cultural Economics, IULM University, Milan; Senior Advisor, OECD Paris; Senior Researcher, metaLAB (at) Harvard and Bruno Kessler Foundation Trento; and Associate Researcher, Italian National Research Council. He has been Visiting Professor at Harvard University, Faculty Associate at the Berkman-Klein Center for Internet and Society, Harvard University, and Special Advisor to the EU Commissioner for Culture. He has been a guest co-editor for the Big Data & Society special issue on “Studying COVID-19 Infodemics at scale”.

Federico Pilati is a PhD candidate at IULM University and a visiting researcher at CNRS – Centre Internet et Société. He is a member of the H2020 project inDICEs and he collaborates with CoMuNe Lab in the analysis of the covid-19 infodemic. His research interests concern the forms and practices of knowledge production in online communities and the study of information disorder phenomena.

Bon après-midi,
