L’intensification des fictions sociotechniques ou comment les finances, l’IA et la cryptomonnaie reconfigurent les imaginaires collectifs

L’un des principaux intérêts des STS est de comprendre la production sociale des faits en tant qu’élément fondamental de la modernité. La fiction, généralement perçue comme l’inverse des faits, occupe une place tout aussi centrale dans l’échafaudage épistémique moderne. Cependant, elle n’a pas reçu la même attention, bien que la séparation entre faits et fiction soit l’une des grandes dichotomies modernes, au même titre que les axes sujet-objet, nature-culture ou sens-matière.

Ce séminaire de recherche vise à présenter la notion de « fictions sociotechniques », définies comme des objets épistémiques, politiques et affectifs qui jettent un pont entre ce qui est institutionnellement soutenu comme un fait et le domaine imaginaire doté de l’ouverture des possibilités. Elles ne sont pas nécessairement liées à l’illusoire ou au faux, mais font partie de l’incertitude nécessaire à un nouveau projet technologique orienté vers l’avenir, car elles aident les constructions abstraites à se frayer un chemin dans la réalité matérielle.

La formation et la stabilisation du technocapitalisme financier, processus hautement prospectif, sont intimement liées à la diffusion de fictions sociotechniques. Le rôle clé des sociétés de capital-risque et des sociétés de conseil, dont les performances sont soutenues par l’utilisation d’instruments d’imagination culturelle tels que les techniques de prévision, a façonné les régimes d’imagination contemporains.

Pour comprendre comment la finance, la technologie et la fiction sont enchevêtrées dans la production de cet imaginaire, nous prêterons attention à deux phénomènes. D’une part, les actions performatives de la fiction concernant les attentes autour de l’IA, et d’autre part, comment les imaginaires crypto-financiers ont mobilisé la fiction basée sur un agenda politique néolibéral.

Sur la base de l’analyse de ces deux cas, nous explorerons l’idée de l’ingénierie de fictions sociotechniques orientées vers des transitions technopolitiques – ou en d’autres termes, dans la conception d’un imaginaire capable de produire des technologies démocratisantes.

The Intensification of sociotechnical fictions. Or how finances, AI and cryptocurrencies reshape collective imagination

One of the central interests in STS is to understand the social production of facts as a fundamental building block of modernity. Fiction, generally perceived as the reverse of fact, occupies an equally central place in modern epistemic scaffolding.  However, it has not been given the same attention, even though the separation between fact and fiction is one of the great modern dichotomies alongside the subject-object, nature-culture or meaning-matter axes.

This research seminar aims to present the notion of sociotechnical fictions (SF), defined as epistemic, political, and affective objects that bridge what is institutionally sustained as a fact with the imaginary realm endowed with the openness of possibility. They are not necessarily linked to the illusory or false, but are part of the necessary uncertainty involved in a new future-oriented technological project since they help abstract constructions to find their way into material reality.

The upbringing and stabilization of financial technocapitalism, a highly future-oriented process, is intimately linked to the spread of sociotechnical fictions. The key role of Venture Capital firms and consultancies, whose performance is sustained by the use of instruments of cultural imagination such as forecast techniques, has shaped contemporary imagination regimes.

To understand how finance, technology and fiction are entangled in the production of this, we will pay attention to two phenomena. On the one hand, the performative agencies of fiction concerning expectations around AI, and on the other, how crypto-financial imaginaries have mobilized fiction based on a neoliberal political agenda.

Based on the analysis of these two cases, we will explore the idea of engineering sociotechnical fictions oriented towards technopolitical transitions – or in other words, in the design of an imagination capable of producing democratising technologies.
