La seconde conférence publique du cycle dédié aux pratiques et à l'épistémologie des humanités numériques, organisée par l'association dhelta UNIL-EPFL en partenariat avec le Collège des Humanités de l'EPFL, approche.

Le Prof. Bruno Bachimont (Université de Technologie de Compiègne) donnera le Jeudi 11 Avril 2024 à 18h, en salle BC 420, une présentation intitulée "L'intelligence a toujours été artificielle". 

Par ses performances souvent inédites et spectaculaires, l'IA interroge l'intelligence humaine et semble parfois lui faire concurrence ou lui promettre un avenir démiurgique. Pourtant, une telle situation n'a rien de nouveau ni de menaçant. En effet, l'intelligence humaine a toujours été artificielle, créant des outils qui stimulent son inventivité en simulant et systématisant ses réalisations. De l'écriture au numérique, l'humanité s'est notamment dotée d'outils qui ont façonné ses connaissances et configuré ses concepts. Par conséquent, la promesse ou la menace que serait l'IA nous en apprennent plutôt davantage sur notre conception contemporaine du réel, de la science et de l'esprit. Et ce sont sans doute elles qui sont inquiétantes.

La conférence, en français, sera suivie d'une discussion et d'un apéritif. Toute la communauté EPFL-UNIL est la bienvenue à cette présentation qui saura soulever questions épineuses et débats stimulants. N'hésitez donc pas à relayer l'information autour de vous !

The second public conference in the keynote series dedicated to the practices and epistemology of the digital humanities, organised by the dhelta UNIL-EPFL association in partnership with EPFL's College of Humanities, is approaching.

Prof. Bruno Bachimont (Université de Technologie de Compiègne) will give a presentation entitled "Intelligence has always been artificial" on Thursday 11 April 2024 at 6 pm in room BC 420. 

Through its often unprecedented and spectacular performances, AI questions human intelligence and sometimes seems to be competing with it or promising it a demiurgic future. Yet there is nothing new or threatening about such a situation. Human intelligence has always been artificial, creating tools that stimulate its inventiveness by simulating and systematising its achievements. From writing to digital technology, humanity has equipped itself with tools that have shaped its knowledge and configured its concepts. As a result, the promise or threat of AI tells us more about our contemporary conception of reality, science and the mind. And it is undoubtedly these that are worrying.

The lecture, in French, will be followed by a discussion and an aperitif. The entire EPFL-UNIL community is welcome to attend this presentation, which is sure to raise some thorny questions and stimulating debates. So don't hesitate to spread the word!
