The Seven Sins of European Digital Identity

The European Digital Identity initiative is too important to fail, but it will if it overlooks the techno-political challenges ahead and moves on with “business as usual”. For Europe to be excellent to all its citizens we need to include a larger community of developers and social scientists. The motivation behind EUDI is to achieve strategic autonomy and interoperability for our public and social services, but its realization sometimes goes in the opposite direction. While working on its implementation, I’ve identified seven problematic issues in an open-hearted document and wish to share their solutions with a larger public.

Jaromil, “The problems in the European Digital Identity (EUDI)”, Blog post, 9 Jan. 2025.

Denis Roio, widely known as Jaromil, is the director of the Dyne.org foundation and an applied cryptographer at The Forkbomb Company. His research focuses on algorethics, exploring the ethical dimensions of algorithms, and he is the creator of Zenroom, a cryptographic virtual machine designed for privacy-preserving computation. Holding a Ph.D. in philosophy, Denis Roio has coined the concept of Algorithmic Sovereignty, advocating for greater autonomy in digital infrastructures. He is an active researcher and writer, publishing on topics such as free software, ethics, media theory, mathematics, and society. A longtime contributor to the free and open-source software (FOSS) community, he has initiated and facilitated numerous projects in this domain, including collaborations with the European Commission. His work bridges the technical and philosophical, addressing the social impact of technology through cryptography, decentralized systems, and ethical computing.

Bonne journée,
