pour une intervention intitulée :

Web historiography: An emerging field within internet studies

Niels Brügger (Ph.D.) is a Director and an associate professor of Internet studies at the Centre for Internet Studies, Aarhus University, Denmark. His research interests include internet theory, Web history, Web archiving, and digital humanities. He has edited the book Web History (Peter Lang, 2010), and his most recent book is Histories of Public Service Broadcasters on the Web (co-edited with Maureen Burns, Peter Lang 2012). Within these fields he has published monographs and a number of edited books as well as articles in international peer reviewed journals and edited volumes. Niels understands French perfectly well, so feel free to ask questions in French, but expect an answer in English. Website: http://imv.au.dk/~nb/

In this talk it is argued that web historiography should be placed higher on the internet studies research agenda, and that it is relevant to a number of disciplines within the humanities. A better understanding of the web of the past is crucial for understanding the web today, whether the focus of such understanding is on political economy, language and culture, social interaction, or everyday use. Based on reflections about 'historiography' and the 'web', Niels Brügger shall discuss in detail some of the major challenges of web historiography compared to historiography in general.

This presentation will also introduce some of the challenges related to web archiving and to the use of archived web materials. The entry point to the methodological discussion will be a very practical and well-known task within any kind of media historiography — the creation of a register of the object of study, in this case websites. How can the creation of a simple register of websites shed new light on the use of the web as a historical source, and thereby on web history?
